↗New Lanark is an exceptionally well-preserved former cotton-mill village on the River Clyde, just south of Lanark. Its mills, workers’ housing and public buildings make the workings of an early industrial community unusually easy to read in the landscape.

↗A major royal fortress on Castle Rock above Stirling’s Old Town, Stirling Castle combines medieval defences, Renaissance palace buildings and later military additions. Its high position above the Forth valley explains both its strategic importance and its lasting presence in Scotland’s history.

↗The remains of a Second World War heavy anti-aircraft battery on Netherton Braes, south of Glasgow. Built as part of the Clyde’s air defences, Carnbooth retains concrete gun emplacements and support buildings, with evidence of later Cold War alteration.

↗Dean Castle is a restored late-medieval castle in Dean Castle Country Park on the north-east side of Kilmarnock. Its tall keep, palace range and wooded setting reflect a long connection with the Boyd family, followed by fire, restoration and public ownership.

↗Cambusnethan Priory, more formally Cambusnethan House, is a ruined Gothic Revival country house above the River Clyde near Overtown, North Lanarkshire. Built for the Lockhart family in 1820, it stands within the remnants of a once extensive estate of parkland, orchards and woodland.

↗A fragmentary early 17th-century tower house on the lower slopes of Dechmont Hill near Cambuslang. Gilbertfield is closely linked with the Hamilton family and the poet William Hamilton of Gilbertfield, whose 1722 version of Blind Harry’s Wallace helped carry the story into later Scottish culture.

↗A large country park on the western side of Coatbridge, centred on Lochend and Woodend lochs. Drumpellier combines water, woodland, grassland and wet ground with traces of an older estate landscape, and forms part of the wider Seven Lochs Wetland Park.

↗A fire-damaged nineteenth-century castellated mansion near Lennoxtown, Lennox Castle is closely associated with the former Lennox Castle Hospital. Its red-sandstone towers, wooded estate setting and difficult institutional history make it a distinctive and thought-provoking local landmark.

↗The remains of Hartwood Hospital stand beside the small North Lanarkshire village of Hartwood, near Shotts. Opened in 1895 as Lanark District Asylum, it grew into a large self-contained psychiatric hospital complex. Its paired clock towers remain a notable local landmark.
